L.M.F.T. stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Practitioners use psychotherapy within a professional relationship, to assist the client in achieving improved interpersonal relationships and interaction within social contexts, personal development, a better psychosocial adaptation, and to modify internal and external conditions which affect individuals, groups in respect to behaviors, emotions and thinking.

L.M.F.T.s are trained to assess, diagnose and provide treatment to groups, couples, families and individuals of all ages. Requirements for licensure include a minimum of a four-year degree and a Master’s degree in the field of psychology or related field. Additionally, a minimum of 3,000 postmaster hours that are supervised and successful completion of a comprehensive written examination given by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners of the State of California are required. Most L.M.F.Ts have taken additional specialized training for certain specific problems or particular methods of treatment. The addition of the term “Intern” indicates that the therapist is registered, but not yet licensed with the State of California Behavioral Science Board, and therefore not permitted to accept “direct” payment for treatment. L.M.F.T. Interns work under the close supervision of a licensed therapist.

L.M.F.T.s provide treatment only within the scope of their license and competence and refers to other qualified professionals when it is appropriate or necessary. All L.M.F.T.s are bound by a professional code of ethics and abide by the law and regulations affecting their profession.
